Admission Requirements to SJSU Master's Degree Program
The requirements set by the University for all
graduate applicants are described in the Graduate Studies and Research
website (
http://www.sjsu.edu/gradstudies/admissionreq.htm).
Once you have been accepted as a graduate student, there are additional requirements for admission to the
Masters in
Nutritional Science program. You may be accepted in one of the following
two categories:
Graduate Conditionally Classified Standing
Graduate Classified Standing

Admission
Requirements to Conditionally Classified Standing
Students seeking an M.S. degree in Nutritional
Science who meet requirements for admission to the Graduate Division, but
lack an undergraduate degree in Nutritional Science, Food Science,
Foodservice Management, or equivalent and have little or no professional
experience, may apply for Conditionally Classified standing in the NuFS
Department. Most applicants will fall into this category. The decision to
accept the student for study in this program will be made by a selection
committee.
You must:
- Have a B.A. or B.S. degree
- Have a grade point average of 3.0 in
upper division courses
(your last 60 semester or 90 quarter units).
- Make up or repeat courses as determined
by advisement with the Graduate
Coordinator, Dr. Panfilo Belo based on your graduate program objectives.
- Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. A minimum of
B grades is required in specific courses.
As a prospective student, you must submit the
following to the Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Belo:
- a letter of intent
- three (3) letters of recommendation from
individuals who can testify to your potential for success in nutritional
science and to your scholastic ability, and
- transcripts from all of the institutions
you have attended.
Admission
Requirements to Classified Standing
Students seeking an M.S. degree in Nutritional
Science who meet requirements for admission to the Graduate Division, and
meet the criteria listed below, may apply for Classified standing in the
NuFS Department. Few applicants will fall into this category. A
selection committee will determine eligibility of the student to meet
Classified standing on the basis of information made available to it.
Criteria for admission to Classified standing
include:
- B.A. or B.S. degree in Nutritional
Science, Food Science, Foodservice Management, Packaging, or
equivalent.
- Grade point average of 3.0 in upper
division courses
(your last 60 semester or 90 quarter units).
- Complete prerequisite course
requirements.
- Evidence of potential ability to do
professional work.
As a prospective student, you must submit the
following to the Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Belo:
- a letter of intent
- three (3) letters of recommendation, and
- transcripts from all previous educational
institutions attended.
