Applying to SJSU and the NuFS Department 1. To apply to San Jose State University and the Department of Nutrition, Food Science and Packaging, use the online graduate application at www.csumentor.edu/AdmissionApp/ Applications for Fall semesters are accepted beginning in November and for Spring semesters beginning in August. Request OFFICIAL college transcripts from ALL post-secondary institutions you have previously attended. Submit OFFICIAL college transcripts in sealed envelopes to the University along with your application and processing fee to insure prompt processing of your application. You can send the application to the University separately to the address below before the support documentation deadline. San Jose State University Another set of official college transcripts in sealed envelopes must be sent to the Nutrition, Food Science and Packaging department before the support documentation deadline. Use the following address: Dr. Panfilo Belo 3. Submit a letter of intent to the Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Panfilo Belo, at the above address. Include information about educational background and professional and career objectives. This letter is required in addition to the statement of purpose found on the online graduate application. 4. Request that three letters of reference be sent to the Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Belo, at the above address. Two of the three reference letters should be from faculty of academic institutions. One reference letter may be from a recent employer. A standard business letter format is sufficient for all letters of reference. For recent SJSU graduates in NuFS and PKG, submit three faculty names, including the name of your advisor, to Dr. Belo at the above address. 5. In your first semester as a matriculated student, telephone (408-924-3108) or meet with Dr. Belo in his office (CCB 105) to discuss career goals. He will provide information regarding department course prerequisites and/or department examinations. Due to the Department's limited budget, the Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Belo, will not be able to return your telephone call if it is outside the 408, 415, 650, 925, or 510 area codes. In general, the faculty are not on duty during Summer/Winter breaks except on designated advising days. Contact the department office at 408-924-3100 or by email (xuan@casa.sjsu.edu) for more information about the advising schedule during Summer/Winter breaks. After the application and transcripts have been received by Graduate Studies, your file will receive an initial evaluation. If minimum university entrance criteria have been met, your file is then forwarded to the NuFS Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Belo, for program consideration. View your application status at http://my.sjsu.edu/ using the login and password provided to you after your application was submitted. The admission decision will be available at http://my.sjsu.edu/ approximately 6-8 weeks after the support documentation deadline. Note: All applications must be reviewed at the same time regardless of when they are submitted; thus final decisions on acceptance cannot be made until 6-8 weeks after the deadline for support documents.
