What is Healthy Campus: San Jose State University
The Healthy Campus Initiative was started in Fall 2007, with a grant from Kaiser Permanente. The goal is to improve awareness, knowledge, access, and ultimately behaviors related to healthy eating and active living among students, faculty and staff at SJSU. It is in alignment with national health goals (Healthy People 2010 and the American College Health Association’s Healthy Campus 2010 Initiative).
What might a Healthy Campus look like?
Healthy San Jose State 2010 is aligned with SJSU Vision 2010.
- Increased access to healthy foods (Dining Commons, vending machines, coffee kiosks, Student Union)
- Point of access/point of purchase nutrition information for foods available on campus
- Weekly Farmers’ Market to provide fresh, local and healthy fruits and vegetables to students, faculty and staff
- Increased knowledge of, access to, and utilization of recreational activities
- Integration of wellness competencies into student outcome objectives.
- Student Success is a shared value. “Individual health is a critical element of both educational and work experience.” As a campus, we have the opportunity and obligation to encourage students, faculty and staff to assume greater responsibility for their own personal health.
- Through this campus-wide initiative, increased awareness, education and support to meet personal health goals will be developed. With individual commitment to health, the concept of a healthy campus will be institutionalized. “Individual health, community well-being, and academic accomplishment are all mutually reinforcing components of a healthy campus.”
- Healthy SJSU 2010 compliments Theme #3: Improving the campus work environment and infrastructure and Theme #4: Strengthening Community Alliances.
