Expected
Competence to be Attained by Dietetic Students
The Didactic Program in Dietetics is currently granted
Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics
Education of The American Dietetic Association, 120 S. Riverside Plaza
Suite 2000, Chicago, 60606-6995, 1-800-877-1600 ext. 5400. Graduates of
the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at SJSU will have met the
didactic requirements of the American Dietetic Association needed to
apply for an accredited/approved supervised practice (dietetic
internship or AP4). After completion of the supervised practice,
students will be prepared to write the registration/licensure
examination in fulfillment of the requirements to become a Registered
Dietitian (R.D.).
As a graduate in the Didactic
Program in Dietetics (DPD), you will be able to:
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the scientific basis of
nutrition, foodservice management, and food science appropriate for
entry level professionals;
- Demonstrate appropriate laboratory skills and an
understanding of scientific/research methodology;
- Apply basic organization and management skills;
- Apply the principles of food production, delivery and
service, procurement, finance, and human resource management;
- Describe nutritional needs throughout the life cycle in
health/disease;
- Plan diets for optimal nutrition in health and disease;
- Communicate and effectively educate groups and/or
individuals through writing, counseling, consulting, and oral
presentations;
- Apply knowledge of government to promote good nutrition and
to be an advocate for consumers on nutrition issues;
- Incorporate analytical skills and computer technology in
professional activities.
