Students can choose dietetic internship programs not at SJSU (External DI) that will take applications from students around the world for placement. They are competitive since places are limited. Currently, the American Dietetic Association (ADA)
lists over 200 Dietetic Internships (DI). These programs are offered all over the US and vary in length, number of interns, commencement date of program, and offers of financial aid of stipends. Students interested in specific programs listed on the ADA Web site should contact the facility for further information.
Students who select a Non-SJSU Dietetic Internship program are not required to complete the 450 Internal DI prerequisite hours and DI content exams.
A Non-SJSU Dietetic Internship application meeting is conducted by Dr. Nancy Lu, the DPD director, each fall semester (end of September or early October). All dietetic students are welcome to attend and obtain information about transcript evaluation and the application process.
The information packets may be obtained from Dr. Lu and consist of the following information:
PART I: Informs students about the application process for a Non-SJSU dietetic internship. Included in the packet is a calendar of important deadlines.
PART II: Informs students about Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) transcript evaluation deadlines, required letters of faculty recommendations, tips on applying for dietetic internships, computer matching of students to dietetic internships, and much more.
PART III: Provides students with a list of currently available DI positions from accredited programs.
In order to apply for any internship, you must have completed the ADA DPD requirements. You must have a Declaration of Intent or SJSU DPD Verification. DPD transcript evaluation is conducted by Dr. Lu. You must contact her at least 2 semesters before applying to have your DPD transcripts evaluated.
