The dietetic internship is a formalized post-baccalaureate educational program and one of the three major requirements by the American Dietetic Association
(ADA) to become a Registered Dietitian. The Department of Nutrition, Food Science, and Packaging maintains a current file on internship programs and provides advising and assistance to students who wish to apply for an internship.
Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD)
To become a Registered Dietitian, students must first complete an educational program that has been approved and accredited by the ADA. The student must have the institution where they completed these courses review their transcripts and issue the student a final verification statement before the student can enter a dietetic internship.
Dietetic Internships (DI)
The dietetic internship is usually administered by a hospital or medical school and accredited by the ADA. The internship programs are designed to provide individual and supervised experience in order to meet the qualifications for practice in dietetics as a Registered Dietitian. Students can choose from the following two options:
SJSU Dietetic Internship program (Internal DI)
Other internship programs not at SJSU (External DI)
RD Exam
After the student has completed the DPD requirements and an approved dietetic internship, the student will register for, and take, the national exam for Registered Dietitians. After passing this exam and completing the required paperwork required by the ADA, the student will be a Registered Dietitian.
